Manager Search Process

Callan is widely recognized as a leader in manager search and due diligence. We have conducted more than 900 investment manager searches over the last five years resulting in the placement of $116 billion.

We conduct over 1,500 interviews a year with the investment manager community providing unparalleled insights into the world of investment management.

It is with this world-class experience and our position in the industry that we are able to bring high-quality institutional managers to middle market investors through MAX.

The manager search and selection process that we utilize to identify investment managers for our Middle Market Matrix is the same used to assist our large and sophisticated institutional investors. Our process provides:

Manager Search Candidate Profiles

The candidate profile describes the attributes sought in the ideal candidate.

Quantitative Screening

Proprietary, state-of-the-art database tools are used to conduct a quantitative screen to assess key metrics such as performance, volatility, correlation with other managers, assets under management, and investment style. This process leads to an initial list of manager candidates.

Qualitative Evaluation

The search process includes an insightful qualitative analysis to narrow the list of candidates. Qualitative factors include: organizational structure; depth and stability of professionals, investment process and philosophy; client servicing capability; and resource allocation.

Peer Review and Oversight

Each search is presented to an oversight body comprised of Callan’s most senior professionals. Senior Callan consultants are also responsible for governing the MAX by adding, removing, or watchlisting managers.

Manager Placement on MAX

Once an investment management firm is identified as a potential MAX participant, Callan negotiates favorable account size minimums and fee terms on behalf of our middle market clientele.
